Greenpeace highlights illegal logging as EU prepares to vote on new laws

Activists from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza have today stopped the loading of timber, from a logging concession riddled with illegalities, onto the log ship Harbour Gemini in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The timber was bound for China, a key re-exporter to the EU. The action comes ahead of the European Commission?s proposal of a new law to exclude illegally-harvested timber products from the EU market.

As the latest round of UN climate talks came to a close today, Greenpeace urged governments to pick up the pace of the negotiations which, in just over a year, must deliver a global deal to save the climate. The meeting, in Accra, Ghana, showed some progress but still lacked the urgency required to meet the 2009 target.

As the Union for the Mediterranean organised by French president Nicolas Sarkozy (1) launched in Paris today, Fifteen Greenpeace activists today hung a banner of a nuclear symbol on the Eiffel Tower (2). The banner was placed in circle of golden stars representing the EU. The stars sponsored by French state nuclear company Areva, have been on the tower since France took over the EU presidency on 1 July.
Activists charged for exposing whale meat scandal

Two Greenpeace peaceful protestors have been charged after they exposed a major scandal around the embezzlement of whale meat from the Japanese government-sponsored Southern Ocean whaling programme. The prosecutor in Aomori, Japan, today charged Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki with theft and trespass, and continue to be detained, despite widespread international protest.
